Social Media for English Language Teaching
In the era of globalization, almost all students use social media. Lately, they access social media to find information and learning resources. It can be seen from the various new methods in the world of education taken from social media. Learning activities also become easier when social media is used in the world of education. Through social media, students can be more creative and independent in learning. So, education is getting better by increasing the quality of students.
In English Language Teaching (ELT), especially Writing course, social media tools offer an excellent opportunity to pre-write, compile, peer review, and revise the steps in the writing process because writing skills are very important for every student who learns English. Through mastering writing skills, students can communicate ideas, thoughts, feelings, and emotions to others in writing. For some people, communicating with written words is easier than communicating verbally. People with difficulty communicating their ideas and feelings verbally will be helped by media writing (Boas, 2011).
The teachers can add and explain more about the material for students in social media, so students can explore their argument; make students simply in learning process and easy study; easy communication; the students can train the ability to write on the feature of the media. It can be a link to share information between students, teachers and even parents. Some social media can play a role in the world of education that can trigger the quality of students, including Facebook, Twitter, Blog, and Youtube. For example, Facebook is one of the popular networking sites in Indonesia. It allows teachers to share experiences with students in the classroom with the help of pictures and other things related to education. Facebook has many features that can be used as learning media, such as Facebook Pages that can be used as an information board because this feature can be used to share material (short posts, links, images, videos, quizzes, etc.) (Loving & Ochoa, 2011). Facebook group, this feature can be used for the community of students, study clubs, and controlling the number of students who did the tasks. It can be used for the discussion board, commenting on tasks, and chatting. Feature chat that can be used to chat directly with other fellow Facebook users who have become friends.
The use of social media in ELT must be a good alternative in teaching. If teachers use social media in their teaching and learning process, it has many advantadges to support students’ writing skill and learning. This is a good step to increase the use of the internet as an educational tool. According to Angers & Machtmes (2005), says that “Using technology during the learning process requires substantial investments of time, financial support, equipment, personal commitment and courage in order to explore teaching innovation in the EFL classrooms”.

PRACTICE 1 PRACTICE FOR WRITING SKILL

PRACTICE 1 PRACTICE FOR WRITING SKILL Read this following paragraph carefully. 1.       RAILWAY MANIAS In 1830 there were a few dozen miles of railways in all the world – chiefly consisting of the line from Liverpool to Manchester. By 1840 there were over 4,500 miles, by 1850 over 23,500. Most of them were projected in a few bursts of speculative frenzy known as the ‘railway manias’ of 1835–7 and especially in 1844–7; most of them were built in large part with British capital, British iron, machines and know-how. These investment booms appear irrational, because in fact few railways were much more profitable to the investor than other forms of enterprise, most yielded quite modest profits and many none at all: in 1855 the average interest on capital sunk in the British railways was a mere 3.7 per cent. PRACTICE 2 SUMMARIZING AND PARAPHRASING

PRACTICE 2 SUMMARIZING AND PARAPHRASING Please read these folowing paragraph carefully. Then, write the summary and paraphrase of the paragraphs. 1. From Bliss, Michael. The Discovery of Insulin. Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1982. Chapter 8, Section I, Paragraph 1, Page 190: Most medical people despised the press, holding attitudes not totally unfamiliar today. Reporters tended to be suckers for every quack, half-quack, over-eager scientist, or naive country doctor who thought he had a serum to cure tuberculosis, a herbal remedy for cancer, or a new surgical procedure to rejuvenate the aged. When the newspapers were not wasting space on undeserving medical stories, they were over-playing legitimate news, getting their facts wrong, and generally making a nuisance of themselves interfering in the lives and practices of busy professionals. Doctors’ deep suspicion of what they read in the newspapers and even in the less-carefully edited of the medical journals, helps to ...
